Dildo Diameter, Circumference & Girth: A Complete Size Guide

14 January 2026 · 7 min read

Diameter, circumference, and girth all describe the same thing — the width of a dildo at a given point — but they use different measurements that produce very different numbers. A 4cm diameter and a 12.6cm circumference refer to the exact same cross-section. If you're comparing products across retailers without knowing which measurement each one is using, you're comparing the wrong numbers.

Diameter vs Circumference: What Each One Measures

Diameter is a straight line measured across the widest point of the cross-section. If you placed the dildo flat on a table and measured across it at its widest point, that's diameter.

Circumference is the distance around the outside — the measurement you'd get if you wrapped a soft tape measure around the dildo at its widest point.

To convert between them: circumference equals diameter multiplied by π (3.14159). So a dildo with a 4cm diameter has a circumference of approximately 12.6cm. A 3cm diameter product measures roughly 9.4cm around.

Most retailers list circumference in inches. Lovehoney, for example, typically lists "girth" as a circumference measurement in inches. To get the diameter in centimetres from a Lovehoney listing, divide the inch measurement by 3.14159 to get diameter in inches, then multiply by 2.54 to convert to centimetres.

Why Diameter Is the More Useful Number

Diameter is easier to visualise and easier to apply to your own body. A 3.5cm diameter is something you can approximate with a household object — the average marker pen runs about 1.5cm in diameter, a standard can of soft drink is about 6.6cm. Circumference requires an extra mental step to picture.

When comparing products across different retailers, always convert everything to diameter first. It's the consistent unit that makes comparison actually possible.

Where to Measure: Tip, Midpoint, and Base

A single diameter figure tells you almost nothing about how a product will feel in use, because most dildos are not uniform in width from tip to base. The tip is typically the narrowest point — the part that determines the initial entry experience. The midpoint is often the widest. The base may be wider still.

A product listed at 4cm diameter might have a 2cm tip and a 4cm midpoint. The entry experience is determined by the tip measurement, not the widest point — but it's the widest point that almost always gets listed.

This is why Intima Index catalogues diameter at three points: tip, midpoint, and base. The midpoint diameter is what most retailers call the "diameter" or "girth" of a product. The tip diameter determines how easy insertion is. The base diameter affects which harnesses are compatible and how the toy sits.

What Diameter Ranges Actually Mean

As a practical reference:

Under 3cm diameter (under 9.4cm circumference): Slim. Suitable for beginners or people who prefer less girth. Most fingers fall in the 1.5–2cm diameter range for comparison.

3–4.5cm diameter (9.4–14.1cm circumference): Average. The most common range for mainstream products. Most people find this range accessible with adequate arousal and lubrication.

4.5–6cm diameter (14.1–18.8cm circumference): Full. Requires preparation, good lubrication, and patience. Products in this range account for a significant share of Bad Dragon's catalogue at medium and large sizes.

Over 6cm diameter (over 18.8cm circumference): Large. This is the range where size is the primary feature rather than incidental to it. Requires significant experience and preparation.

How to Filter by Diameter on Intima Index

The product filter on Intima Index lets you select a girth bracket — Slim, Average, Full, or Large — and toggle between diameter and circumference display, in centimetres or inches. Every bracket is based on midpoint diameter, which is the standard measurement point used across the catalogue.

If you know the diameter or circumference you're working with and want to find products in that range, the filter is the fastest way to narrow 900+ products to the ones that actually fit your criteria.
